His Excellency Timothy Musa Kabba, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Republic of Sierra Leone (Chair), and His Excellency Ahmed Attaf, Minister of Foreign Affairs and National Community Abroad of the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria (Host), co-hosted the Eleventh Ministerial Meeting of the Foreign Ministers of the African Union Committee of Ten (C-10) on 10 June 2024 in Algiers, Algeria.
Also in attendance was His Excellency Ambassador Bankole Adeoye, African Union Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security, who represented the Chairperson of the African Union Commission.
In the meeting, the Committee deeply appreciated His Excellency Abdelmadjid Tebboune, President of the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria, and the Government and People of Algeria for their warm hospitality. The C-10 Member States also appreciated His Excellency Dr. Julius Maada Bio, President of the Republic of Sierra Leone and the Coordinator of the C-10, for his outstanding leadership and dedication in pursuing the C-10 mandate and promoting the objectives of the Common African Position (CAP) on United Nations Security Council reform.
Among other things, the Ministerial Meeting allows the C-10 to take stock of gains made in the ongoing Intergovernmental Negotiations (IGN) process to strategically position the CAP in the buildup to the Summit of the Future: in particular, for Africa to be treated as a special case and prioritized in the reform process to rectify a historic injustice.
The Ministerial Meeting was preceded by the meeting of Senior Officials of the C-10 member States from capital, and Permanent Representatives in Addis Ababa and New York. The Senior Officials meeting was chaired by the Director-General and Ambassador-at-Large of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Republic of Sierra Leone and the Secretary-General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and National Community Abroad of the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria.
H.E. Dr. Michael Imran Kanu, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Sierra Leone to the United Nations provided an overview of the activities of the C-10 in New York and Status of the UN General Assembly Intergovernmental Negotiations on the reform of the Security Council. He also presented to the C-10 Foreign Ministers the recommendations of the Senior Officials, which formed the basis of the 11th C-10 Ministerial Meeting Outcome. The Meeting concluded with the adoption of the Ministerial Outcome.
