Democratic Republicof the Congo: Vote on MONUSCO Mandate Renewal

December 20th, 2024.

The Security Council voted on a draft resolution renewing the mandate of the UN Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO) for one year, until 20 December 2025.

France and Sierra Leone are the co-penholders on the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).

In a statement before the vote, Sierra Leone’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative H.E. Dr Michael Imran Kanu
stated ” It is our hope that today’s adoption can be a moment that will significantly change the trajectory of the situation in the DRC towards a peaceful resolution of the conflict and it can also strengthen the laudable efforts of President Joao Lourenco, President of Angola and African Union designated mediator of the Luanda process.”

The resolution was adopted unanimously as Resolution 2765; and in an Explanation of Vote After the Vote delivered on behalf of the A3 Plus, (Sierra Leone, Algeria, Mozambique and Guyana), Mozambique’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative H.E Pedro Comissário affirmed the A3+’ ‘underscoring of “the importance of effective implementation of MONUSCO’s mandate, crucial to the stability of the country and protecting civilians in the DRC and protecting civilians in the DRC. For MONUSCO to succeed effective collaboration with the DRC Government is vital, particularly in planning the next steps for the mission’s drawdown and consolidating the drawdown in South Kivu.”
