This year’s commemoration of the Day of International Criminal Justice focused on victims of mass atrocities and their meaningful involvement in international criminal proceedings.
At the event, Sierra Leone’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations, H.E. Dr. Michael Imran Kanu, who also serves as Vice President of the Assembly of States Parties highlighted the importance of prioritizing victims in international criminal justice.
He emphasized the crucial role of truth, memory, and justice in addressing mass atrocities.
Ambasssdor Kanu’s presentation featured Sierra Leone’s transitional justice process, the significance of truth-telling, memory preservation, and accountability through the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and the Special Court for Sierra Leone.
The panel included distinguished members such as Ms. Päivi Kaukoranta, President of the Assembly of States Parties to the Rome Statute (moderator), Judge Tomoko Akane, President of the International Criminal Court, Judge Rosario Salvatore Aitala, First Vice-President of the International Criminal Court, and Mr. Pablo de Greiff the first United Nations Special Rapporteur on the promotion of truth, justice, reparation and guarantees of non-recurrence.
