Statement by the President of the Security Council on the Peacebuilding Architecture of the Peace Building Commission

The Security Council reaffirms its resolutions 1645 (2005), 1947 (2010), 2282 (2016), 2413 (2018), 2558 (2020), and recalls its resolution 2171 (2014) and presidential statements S/PRST/2015/2, S/PRST/2016/12, PRST/2017/27, and S/PRST/2018/20, and reaffirms the critical importance of peacebuilding and sustaining peace.

The Security Council notes with appreciation the release of the Secretary-General’s report on Peacebuilding and Sustaining peace on 27 December 2024 (A/79/552*-S/2024/767*), and takes notes of the inputs for the 2025 review of the UN Peacebuilding Architecture by the Peacebuilding Commission (PBC), through its letter dated 13 November 2024, while acknowledging submission of a letter dated 21 November 2024 by the group of Independent Eminent Persons and the inputs from thematic and regional consultations. The Security Council notes that the upcoming review will be the fourth, marking the 20th anniversary of the Peacebuilding Architecture. The Council appreciates, in this respect, the important work undertaken since the inception of the Architecture.

The Security Council welcomes the progress made in the implementation of the resolutions on peacebuilding and sustaining peace, including through the relevant intergovernmental bodies of the UN, and by the UN system, including through the reforms of the UN, and in particular at the field level through the work of peacekeeping operations, special political missions and UN country teams, and the important work of the Peacebuilding Fund, and encourages Member States and the United Nations system, in partnership with relevant stakeholders, to continue to take action to implement resolutions on peacebuilding and sustaining peace and to advance efforts to bring greater coherence to peacebuilding efforts, in support of national peacebuilding, and in particular in conflict-affected countries .

The Security Council welcomes the holding of annual consultative meetings between the Peace and Security Council of the African Union and the PBC, and further stresses the importance of partnership and cooperation between the United Nations and the African Union consistent with Chapter VIII of the United Nations Charter.

The Security Council looks forward to the outcome of the 2025 review of the UN Peacebuilding Architecture, and to the consideration of its recommendations in order to improve the peacebuilding capacity of the UN system, inter alia, by strengthening the performance and impact of the Peacebuilding Architecture, with the view to realize its full potential, in line with the terms of reference circulated in the letter co-signed by the President of the Security Council and the President of the General Assembly dated 30 April 2024.
